News update from the Omani Centre for Human Rights (OCHR):
Another in string of arrests of citizens from Musandam Governorate
An OCHR source informs us that the Internal Security Service has again widened its campaign of arrests against citizens from Dibba al-Bayah in Oman’s far northern Musandam Governorate, the reasons for which the authorities have still not explained. According to a reliable source, the latest citizen to be detained is Ali Saeed al-Hamoudi al-Shehhi, who was called in for questioning on July 17, 2018, and as of July 25 has still not been released. However, several other people who were called in at around that date were all allowed to go free after signing pledges not to engage in social media.
The five detained individuals whose names the OCHR has published previously (click here for details) have now been sent for trial. The second session of the trial took place on July 22, 2018, without the defendants’ lawyers being allowed to see their files. The case was adjourned until August 26, 2018.
The OCHR demands that all detainees must be afforded their legal rights, and either be released or have their legal representatives allowed to interview them.
