Youssef al-Arimi’s detention

Oman’s Internal Security Service (the intelligence) has been holding Omani social media activist Youssef al-Arimi in detention since April 8, 2018, without either indicating the reason for his arrest or allowing him to contact his lawyer. Youssef, who was born in 1978 in the city of Sur, in Al-Sharqiya South Governorate, is a teacher employed by the Education Ministry. According to the OCHR’s sources, he was called in for questioning about comments he had posted on his Twitter account, though the nature of the tweets in question is not known. The OCHR notes, however, that Youssef is a regular contributor to social media debates and often criticises both local and international public policies.
